Most Orange Romania iPhones that refuse another SIM are carrying an ordinary network lock the previous owner never asked Orange to remove. Orange will take it off at no charge, but only through the account the handset sits under.

The request comes from the Orange account Orange takes it through My Orange or over the counter in an Orange shop. If you bought the handset second-hand or out of an amanet, the account it sits under is not yours and the purchase paperwork is not either.
Locked to Orange Romania and nothing else Orange only removes its own lock. A handset locked to another Romanian operator, or to a carrier abroad, is turned away — and plenty of phones on the second-hand market here are not Orange phones at all.
Within the handset's normal service life Orange says it unlocks during the average period of use stated on the manufacturer's warranty certificate. Past that it depends on what is still technically possible, which is a judgement Orange makes rather than you.

None of that touches us, because we work from the IMEI rather than from your relationship with Orange. Bought through Buy Back, or off an amanet shelf Orange's Buy Back is a trade-in for a voucher and puts no lock of its own on anything. A handset from that stock is normally carrying the plain Orange network lock nobody removed, and that does come off by IMEI. What a network unlock cannot lift is a bar on the IMEI itself — if the handset has been reported lost or stolen it stays barred whatever happens to the network lock.

There is no unlock code for an iPhone Apple does not use them. Anyone selling you a code for an iPhone is selling you nothing. The unlock is recorded against the IMEI, then you insert the new SIM.

When Orange says no

Can you unlock my phone if Orange says it is not eligible?

Usually yes. Carriers apply their own eligibility rules — minimum time on the network, balance paid off, account in good standing. We are not bound by those rules, so a handset Orange will not unlock today can very often be unlocked by us today.

Can I unlock while I am still paying the phone off?

Yes. An outstanding instalment balance or an active contract does not stop us. You still owe the balance to your carrier — unlocking does not cancel the debt — but it no longer blocks you from using another network.

Do I need to wait out the carrier minimum period?

No. There is no waiting period on our side. That is the single most common reason people come to us rather than going through the carrier.

Do you need my Orange account or the account holder?

No. We do not need the account holder, a password, a PIN, or any contact with Orange. All we need is the IMEI, which you get by dialling *#06# on the handset.

What if I bought the phone second-hand?

That is fine. Ownership history does not affect the unlock — this is exactly the case carriers refuse, because the account was never in your name.
