What Metro by T-Mobile asks for before it will unlock a phone
Metro by T-Mobile, formerly MetroPCS, is T-Mobile's prepaid brand and is covered by T-Mobile's prepaid unlock rules. Those rules ask for 365 days from activation, where a T-Mobile postpaid handset qualifies after 40 days.
- 365 days since the phone was activated T-Mobile's prepaid rule is that at least 365 days must have passed since the device was activated on the network. It counts from activation, not from the day you bought the handset.
- Or more than $100 of refills and 14 days There is one way in before the year is up. The prepaid account must have taken more than $100 in refills for each active line during that period, and more than 14 days must have passed since the device was purchased.
- Two unlocks per line in any 12 months No more than two device unlocks can have been completed per line of service in the last 12 months. T-Mobile can also ask for proof of purchase before it acts.
- Clean IMEI, account in good standing The device must not be reported lost, stolen or blocked, and the account attached to it has to be in good standing. Deployed military in good standing can unlock on production of overseas orders.

When MetroPCS says no
Can you unlock my phone if MetroPCS says it is not eligible?
Usually yes. Carriers apply their own eligibility rules — minimum time on the network, balance paid off, account in good standing. We are not bound by those rules, so a handset MetroPCS will not unlock today can very often be unlocked by us today.
Can I unlock while I am still paying the phone off?
Yes. An outstanding instalment balance or an active contract does not stop us. You still owe the balance to your carrier — unlocking does not cancel the debt — but it no longer blocks you from using another network.
Do I need to wait out the carrier minimum period?
No. There is no waiting period on our side. That is the single most common reason people come to us rather than going through the carrier.
Do you need my MetroPCS account or the account holder?
No. We do not need the account holder, a password, a PIN, or any contact with MetroPCS. All we need is the IMEI, which you get by dialling *#06# on the handset.
What if I bought the phone second-hand?
That is fine. Ownership history does not affect the unlock — this is exactly the case carriers refuse, because the account was never in your name.
